Who We Are

We are people just like you;
We are people from all walks of life and from countries all over the world;
We define ourselves by our stand for the following:

WORLD RUNNERS OPERATING PRINCIPLES

  • World Runners is a public benefit nonprofit organization operated and managed by volunteers.
  • We value personal commitment, quality contributions, integrity, openness and transparency, and team work.
  • We are mindful that our mission is accomplished through the generosity of our volunteers, sponsors and participants.
  • We focus on acknowledgment, appreciation and validation of all contributors and volunteers.
  • Volunteer work assignments will be chosen by the volunteers. World Runners will maintain a list of opportunities for contributions. The officers of the organization have job descriptions.
  • The governing principle for volunteer contributions is that the person gets more value out of it than he/she puts in.
  • We keep faith in public trust through efficient, compassionate, cost-effective management of resources.
  • We accomplish tasks with elegance and ease.

World Runners was founded in 1977 by a group of runners with a mission to make a difference in the world. The difference to make? To end the existence of hunger and poverty in the world. Our fundraising efforts occur largely through our community marathon or 10k races as we want our running to as we want to count for more than just thousands of steps. We wanted our running to make a lasting difference in the world as well.

It became increasingly clear that poverty was one of the prime reasons for the persistence of hunger. People with means seemed to be able to feed themselves regardless of where they lived. The key link in the persistence of hunger seemed to be poverty and people lacking economic empowerment. And, what better way to end poverty than through microcredit and education.
